When the Achilles tendon comes under too much stress, it can become inflamed (the tendinitis) or even rupture. To prevent the debilitating issue, it's important to stretch the calves, not build up mileage too quickly, and avoid excessive hill work or speedwork. It's also important to buy the right running shoes. Wearing inflexible shoes, shoes that don't fit your stride (for pronators especially), and shoes with a low heel-to-drop can all cause Achilles issues.
